Math Students in Action
Math is a practical science dedicated to numbers and concrete ideas. The Math Department at Adrian College goes beyond that to apply math outside of the classroom to become applicable, understandable and useable.
Continuing on from her 2012 Ribbons of Excellence presentation, Sondra Bryan returned in 2013 with Scheduling with Linear Programming II. The new version of her presentation focused on building a weekly schedule for 18 employees of a summer camp with restraints. In her abstract for her presentation, Bryan says, “Linear programming problem (also known as linear optimization) is the problem of maximizing or minimizing a linear function subject to a number of linear constraints. To solve a real life problem…simplex algorithm is used. We [employed] the algorithm on ou problem using Excel. Once this problem is solved, the model can be generalized to cut the time it takes to create schedules for any organization.”
