ADRIAN, Mich. – The Track & Explore program at Adrian College received a $15,000 grant from the MIS Cares Foundation and the Walmart Foundation in support of the College’s program with the acclaimed speedway.
Track & Explore is an innovative collaboration between Adrian College and NASCAR venue Michigan International Speedway (MIS). The program uses 900 acres of natural area at MIS as an outdoor classroom for middle school students and as a practicum for Adrian College science and education majors. Adrian College students conduct research, create lessons and lead environmental-science field trips at the site.
The grants will support the integration of technology into the science field trips offered, purchase experimental materials, and support research stipends for AC students.
“We are thrilled to once again receive support from MIS Cares in our efforts to use the beautiful land surrounding the MIS racetrack for developing future scientists. We are pleased to provide free field trips to middle school students, and support materials to teachers with the money from this grant” said Dr. Agnes Caldwell, vice president and dean for academic affairs at Adrian. “We continue to seek ways to expand this unique endeavor, and are grateful for these gifts.”
The Track & Explore program continues to garner state and national recognition. In spring of 2013, the initiative brought over 1,400 area middle school students to the track for outdoor education field trips. The College and Michigan International Speedway look to expand the program to include science camps and continuing education opportunities for science teachers.
