ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College applauds Dr. Craig Weatherby and Professor Beth Myers for their excellence in teaching. Each professor was formally recognized and honored at the College’s opening convocation on September 22, 2011.
“These two awards are given out at the beginning of each school year to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and teaching excellence of our professors,” said Dr. Agnes Caldwell, Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs.
The first award, the Ross Newsom Award for Outstanding Teaching honors the memory of Ross Newsom, Class of 1936, and is sponsored by his sons. This year’s award was presented to Dr. Craig Weatherby.
Dr. Weatherby joined the faculty at Adrian College in 1978 having earned his Ph.D. in zoology from Auburn University. Dr. Weatherby has been the recipient of three NSF instrumentation awards totaling close to $100,000, since his arrival to the Adrian College campus. Most recently, he spent his sabbatical in Fiji studying ecology and politics. An internationally recognized researcher with over 40 academic presentations to his credit, the campus community as “the Turtle guy” affectionately knows him. Dr. Weatherby is also known for his artistic creations in which he uses his knowledge of ecology and the environment to create award-winning works of art.
The second award, the The Exemplary Teaching Excellence Award, is sponsored by the Division of Higher Education of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church. This year’s Teaching Excellence Award was given to Professor Beth Myers.
Professor Myers is alumna from Adrian College, graduating in 1979 and going on to earn her MA in English from the University of Toledo. For years she was director of the Adrian College Writing Center and led the Writing across the Curriculum program. She recently authored a poem titled Road Kill which is part of a collection titled The Moment I knew; Reflections from Women on Life’s Defining Moments and is a frequent presenter of workshops and papers on college writing.
The administration is honored to have these two outstanding professors as part of the talented faculty at Adrian College.
“There is no higher praise from students and colleagues than being challenging, supportive and innovative,” said Caldwell. “We are fortunate to have such devoted professors like Craig Weatherby and Beth Myers challenging and inspiring our students everyday here at Adrian College.”
