ADRIAN, Mich. – “Entelechy,” an exhibition of works by Adrian College seniors Janene Dusseau, Crocifissa-Kristina Martin, Erick Sala, Tim Schlemmer, Kristen Smith, Erika Squanda and Sydney Wlodyka, is on view in Adrian College’s Shipman Library now through March 17. These works are displayed in three exhibit spaces including: Valade Gallery, the Stubnitz Conference Room, and the Nicolay Heritage Room.
The title, Entelechy, describes a force moving one toward self-fulfillment; a term derived from the history of philosophy. These exhibitions are a requirement toward completion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees within the Art and Design Department.
Janene Dusseau and Tim Schlemmer have created sculptural installations. Dusseau’s brazed atoms and PVC bonds reveal molecules central to contemporary life such as aspirin, caffeine and alcohol. Schlemmer uses chicken wire, garbage bags, twist ties and light to create a shadowy world evolved after an ecological disaster or degradation.
Erick Sala displays his digital armored video game characters, as well as a clay sculpture.
Kristina Martin’s abstracted, fragmented female forms are painted on loose canvas sheets hanging from birch branches. Erika Squanda paints dancers expressing joy in their relationships with God. Images, numerals and shapes densely layered in intense acrylic colors serve as a code for Kristen Smith’s beliefs, interests and experiences.
Sydney Wlodyka paints oil portraits of significant moments in the lives of her friends from their snapshots. Each are intermixed on the walls with the friends’ written recollections, supplementing Wlodyka’s abstract photographs to form a timeline. The overarching theme is time, from moment to memory.
A reception for the artists takes place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11.
All gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Sundays.
