Adrian College’s Baby Bulldog Center Offers Daycare in Lenawee County

Adrian, Michigan (June 30, 2016) - Adrian College will welcome its youngest students ever this summer, when the new Baby Bulldog Center (BBC) opens in August.

The Center is the College’s latest effort to offer quality child care to the community while educating future teachers.  Similar to the College’s collaboration with the Little Maples Preschool, the BBC will serve as laboratory classroom for Adrian College teacher education students pursuing an early childhood education, or “ZS,” endorsement as part of their teaching certificates. The early childhood endorsement requires “20 extra course credit hours and 60 professional internship hours” according to Andrea Milner, the director of the Institute for Education.

“As schools are increasingly under pressure to do more with less, they will look for teachers who have credentials, such as the early childhood endorsement, beyond the basic certification,” Milner said. “We want to provide all our students – babies and undergraduates – the best start we can.”

The Center will accommodate up to 12 children, aged newborn to 3 years.  Adrian College students working at the BBC will be under the supervision of a licensed childcare professional, providing high-quality daycare where children engage in educational, developmentally appropriate play, and benefit from a low child-teacher ratio.  And, in a county where 69.6% of children aged zero to five have two working parents, the Center will be a welcome addition to the existing childcare landscape according to Dr. Agnes Caldwell, the College’s vice president and dean for academic affairs.

“Infant daycare is a high-need service in Lenawee County,” Caldwell said, noting that the College’s first childcare project, The Little Maples Preschool, had to open a second location in 2014 due to popular demand.

“Community response to the preschool was so positive, and it prompted calls for the same quality care for younger children,” she said. “We’re glad we can address that need while helping our students become the best teachers they can be.”

The BBC is located on the first floor of Valade Hall, and will open its doors in August.  For pricing and enrollment information contact Dr. Andrea Milner at
