ADRIAN, Mich. - The 2013-14 Adrian College Senior Athletes of the Year are Sam Barker (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) of the women’s soccer team and Holden Branch (Onsted, Mich./Onsted HS) of the baseball team. The student-athletes are selected by a vote amongst the athletic department coaches and staff. The two will be recognized at the Athletic Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 3 and during pre-game at the homecoming football game against Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Sam Barker is the most highly decorated women’s soccer player in the history of Adrian College. Barker was a three-time First Team All-MIAA selection as a freshman, sophomore and senior. She became the first player in program history to be named All-American as she was named NSCAA Third Team All-American after her sophomore season. Sam needed just two years to become the all-time leading scorer at Adrian College and finished her career with seven school records including 65 goals, 29 assists, 159 points, 23 game-winning goals, 292 shots, 4.06 shots per game and 180 shots on goal. The two-time First Team All-Region player also ranks 11th all-time in MIAA history with 44 goals and 108 points during conference action. During her senior season, she captured the MIAA Player of the Year award for the second time in her career. In 2013, she finished first in the MIAA with 15 goals, 38 points, 80 shots and 45 shots on goal.
Holden Branch turned in a two-year period on the mound for the baseball team that will be hard to duplicate. He was named First Team All-Region by the ABCA and Second Team All-Region by D3Baseball.com in 2014. Branch posted an 8-0 record with a 2.45 earned run average this past season in 66 innings. He made 10 starts and threw three complete games. Holden allowed just 54 hits while walking 21 and striking out 25. He limited the opponent to a .226 batting average, while helping lead the team to its sixth straight MIAA championship and third straight MIAA Tournament title. In 2014, Branch ranked tied for fifth in school history in wins and was ninth in opponents’ batting average. For his career, Branch ranks second all-time at Adrian College with a 2.51 earned run average and a .222 opposing batting average.
