Dr. Maggie Johnson, Vice President of Education and University Programs for Google, has been announced as the speaker for the 158th commencement ceremony at Adrian College. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. at Commencement Plaza in the heart of the College’s campus. She will also receive an honorary degree recognizing her accomplishments.
“Maggie Johnson’s life and career represent a combination of intelligence, hard work, and service to others. Dr. Johnson possesses a keen sense for these hallmarks of a liberal arts education and is the embodiment of their role in global leadership today,” said Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, president of Adrian College.
“We are honored she will be speaking to our graduates.”
Recent Commencement speakers include Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, former United States Senator Carl Levin, entrepreneur and business executive William K. Hall, Ph.D., and Carol Van Andel, Trustee of the Van Andel Education Institute Council and the Michigan Colleges Foundation.
Dr. Maggie Johnson manages all technical training, content development, and information management programs for Google engineers and operations staff, as well as Google’s K12 educational programs in STEM and computer science. She also manages the University Relations area, building research partnerships with faculty and labs globally; and Google’s strategic initiatives in online teaching and learning.
Dr. Johnson has a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Early Music Performance and was a professional musician in NYC before she moved to Computer Science, obtaining a master’s and Ph.D. from New York University and City University of New York Graduate Center.
Prior to Google, Maggie was teaching faculty and Director of Educational Affairs in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University where she was responsible for the Undergraduate and Masters programs in CS.
In addition to her role at Google, Dr. Johnson has served as an expert witness on several high-profile software lawsuits; has been a member of the ACM Education and Professional Development boards, and currently serves on the board of directors for code.org and NCWIT.
