Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse Advance to NCAA Tournament

Lacrosse teams next match scheduled for May 8 against Otterbein and Kenyon, respectively.

ADRIAN, Mich.—Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams will advance to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament Championship. 

The Adrian College men’s lacrosse team captured the championship by beating visitin Albion College 12-10 on May 4 at Multi-Sport Performance Stadium. 

The game was decided by Adrian’s fast start and their dominance in the faceoff circle where they went 18-for-26.

The Bulldogs had the edge in groundballs, 30-26, and converted three more clears than Albion with 15.

Albion and Adrian met the previous week in both team’s season finales with both teams entering the contest with undefeated conference records and the MIAA regular-season title on the line. Albion led by a goal entering the fourth quarter but an Adrian rally led to a 10-8 victory last Saturday.

This was the fourth meeting between the two teams with Adrian winning them all.

After spending the previous three seasons in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference and including this year’s MIAA participation, Adrian has a combined 35-0 record in any conference competition including playoffs.

The Bulldogs will now advance to the NCAA tournament with an automatic bid as the MIAA playoff champions. They currently have an eight-game win streak entering the NCAA Tournament.

The men’s lacrosse team (13-3) will host Otterbein University (12-5) on Wednesday, May 8 at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Torunament. This will be Adrian’s third consecutive and overall appearance in the tournament. It will be the first home game for the Bulldogs after plating the last two seasons on the road. 

Fans will be able to follow the contest on live stats or live video. The Otterbein/Adrian winner will travel to play No. 2-ranked and undefeated Dickinson College (17-0 in Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday, May 11. 


The women’s lacrosse team also won their matchup against the visiting Alma College 17-6 on May 4 at Multi-Sport Performance Stadium. 

Both teams entered the contest with 15-2 records. The win was Adrian’s 10th consecutive and secures the team’s participation in the NCAA Division III Tournament next week.

“I think this game will really prepare us for the NCAA Tournament next Wednesday,” said Adrian head coach Rachel Cibulas.

“We played a bit of a slow first half but we knew if we focused on the small things that we would prevail. We’re used to being a second half team so we knew to just throw it into second gear and move,” said Cibulas.

Adrian goalkeeper Maddie McDonald registered 13 saves in recording her 16th win of the season. The Bulldogs top-three scorers on the day were Olivia Duncan and Cassie Hoyez with five points followed by Stacey Birlson with four (two goals, two assists).

Adrian had the edge in groundballs, 15-9, and overall shots, 42-23.

Adrian came close to an undefeated season with just two losses. The team dropped non-conference games to Denison University, 14-13, and No. 19 Christopher Newport University, 13-9.

The women’s lacrosse team (16-2) will host Kenyon College (13-2) in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Tournament on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. 

Adrian will be making its third straight and overall NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bulldogs dropped a 25-10 decision at eventual national champion Gettysburg on May 11, 2011 and then fell at home to Denison, 11-10, in double overtime on May 9, 2012.
