Synchronized Skating Finished Ninth in Nationals Debut

Synchronized skating team recognized as one of the top ten in the country

PLYMOUTH, Mich.—Adrian College’s varsity synchronized skating team earned a season’s best score of 66.46 points for a ninth place finish at the 2013 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships on Saturday in Plymouth, Michigan. The team earned 26.18 points in Technical Elements and 40.28 points in Program Components in its nationals debut. The Collegiate team improved by an overall margin of 8.82 points from its qualifying performance at Midwestern Sectionals in January. Taking a closer look at the results, the team also bested both Wisconsin and Western Michigan (in seventh and eighth place, respectively) in the Technical Elements Score.

“Well, I think it’s a great performance to build on. Their head coach, Ashley Carlson, is really someone who has been in the sport for a long time and loves to skate - and you can see how she promotes that with her athletes and they carry that throughout their performance. So, I feel like they should feel really well accomplished at their first appearance here in the National Championships,” commented Becky Search, during the live broadcast of the event. Becky Search serves as an athlete representative on U.S. Figure Skating’s Board of Directors and as chair of the Synchronized Skating Committee.

“I will never forget this weekend,” head coach Ashley Carlson reminisces. “This was the team’s first appearance at nationals, and it was also my first time as a coach at nationals. I couldn’t stop jumping up and down rink side when they finished their performance. The team accomplished every goal we set out at the beginning of the season. You can’t beat that.”

Miami claimed the national championship with a score of 92.26. Delaware finished second with a score of 84.11, while Michigan placed third with 77.98 and was followed by Team Excel (77.12), Spartan Synchronized Skating (76.75), New Hampshire (76.63), Wisconsin (69.13), Western Michigan (68.70), Adrian (66.46), IllinoiSkating (60.44), Oswego (54.13) and Massachusetts (51.06), respectively.

The varsity synchronized skating team is hosting a free Recruitment Weekend in conjunction with tryouts for the 2013-2014 season on March 29-30, 2013. The program is looking to expand by adding a Senior team for 2013-14. Please contact head coach Ashley Carlson at or 517-265-5161 (ext. 5008) for more information.
