Biography
Kathleen (Kelly) Hill-Kretzer instructs three Music History courses ranging from Antiquity through the Modern Era, Introduction to Music, Music of Africa & South America, Music of the East/Far East and Applied Flute Lessons at Adrian College. She also leads the Thursday Instrumental Studio Class and conducts the Flute Choir. She continues to keep a thriving private flute studio in Toledo and previously taught non-music majors for over a decade at the University of Findlay in a lively Music Appreciation class as well as maintained a full flute studio. Before her appointments at Adrian College and The University of Findlay, Kelly worked in the Music Composition, History and Theory department at Bowling Green State University where she instructed hundreds of Music Appreciation students.
Kelly continues to be a member of both the Adrian Symphony Orchestra and the Lima Symphony Orchestra and has played several principal flute, second flute or piccolo in both for over a decade. She continues to play in both solo and chamber music capacities throughout Ohio and Michigan and loves to bring a variety of classical, modern (including premieres) and jazz-inspired works into her programs.
Ms. Hill-Kretzer received a Bachelor's degree in flute performance "with distinction" from Illinois State University. She double majored in graduate school at Bowling Green State University in Music History and Flute Performance, receiving her M.M. in Flute Performance in 1999. During graduate studies, she was appointed the assistantship in medieval & Renaissance Music History, working with her history mentor Dr. Mary Natvig, where she managed student workers in the music library and taught private flute lessons through the Creative Arts Program. Her flute instructors have included Randall Hester, Judith Bentley, Walfrid Kujala and Max Schoenfeld.
In her spare time, Kelly likes to listen to her husband and drummer Scott Kretzer perform (and talk), runs after her son Liam, and tries not to neglect their 20 lb. salt-and-pepper Schnoodle, Dr. Bombay. Both Liam an "Doc" like to "help" Kelly garden and rearrange any of her home decorating projects. At the end of the day, Kelly enjoys reading--that is, before she falls asleep in her book.
